**“Rove Beetles”: Do Not Swat — Avoid the Risk of Skin Ulceration**
As the weather warms or when engaging in outdoor field activities, rove beetles become more active. When visiting mountainous areas or grassy fields for tomb-sweeping and ancestral rites, the likelihood of skin contact with these insects increases significantly. To prevent chemical skin burns, please take note of the following key health guidelines.
1. Understanding the Threat of Rove Beetles
Rove beetles do not actively bite humans. The real danger lies in the toxin within their bodies — **pederin**.
- Highly corrosive:** This toxin has strong chemical reactivity.
- Mechanism of exposure:** When the insect is crushed or swatted, a large amount of toxin is released and comes into contact with the skin.
- Clinical symptoms:** Within about 24 hours after contact, the skin may develop linear or patchy redness, blisters, burning sensations, pain, and itching. Improper handling may lead to severe skin ulceration or secondary infection.
2. Key Protective Measures for Outdoor Activities
- Wear long sleeves and pants:** Cover as much skin as possible to reduce exposure.
- Use insect repellent:** Apply repellents containing DEET or picaridin on clothing to reduce the chance of insect contact.
- Take precautions when clearing vegetation:** Wear gloves when removing weeds or tidying grave sites.
- Be cautious at night:** Rove beetles are attracted to light. When staying overnight in mountainous areas, keep window screens closed and minimize the use of bright lights.
3. Proper Response and Handling
If a rove beetle lands on your skin, remember: **Do NOT swat it.**
- Remove gently:** Blow it away or gently brush it off with your fingers.
- Rinse immediately:** If the insect is accidentally crushed, wash the affected area thoroughly with plenty of water and soap to dilute and remove the toxin.
- Apply a cold compress:** Helps relieve redness and burning sensation after washing.
- Seek medical care:** Do not apply unverified remedies or break blisters. Visit a dermatology clinic promptly for proper treatment to prevent scarring or deeper infection.
